Indiana College Core

Do you want to get a head start on college? The Indiana College Core allows high school students to earn 30 general education credits that can be transferred as a block to any public college or university in Indiana, as well as some private institutions. In other words, students who earn the College Core in high school may already be finished with their first year of college at a fraction of the cost. To learn more about the Indiana College Core and put together your plan, use My College Core (link at the bottom) and work closely with your school counselor.

Beginning in the 2023-24 school year Shenandoah High School has partnered with Indiana University East to offer the Indiana College Core. The ICC was established in 2012 with Senate Enrolled Act 182 which established the requirements for a Statewide Transfer General Education Core of at least 30 credit hours.  The established framework for the Statewide Transfer General Education Core (now referred to as the “Indiana College Core”) includes six categories:

1.) Written Communication (3 credits required)
2.) Speaking and Listening (3 credits required)
3.) Quantitative Reasoning (3-4 credits required)
4.) Scientific Ways of Knowing (5-6 credits required)
5.) Social and Behavioral Ways of Knowing (6 credits required)
6.) Humanistic and Artistic Ways of Knowing (6 credits required)

Students who complete the minimum 30 credits within the Indiana College Core are able to transfer these courses as a block to a participating college or university and fulfill the institution’s liberal arts requirement. Students who do not complete the College Core can still transfer individual credits, however, the ICC makes the transfer process much easier.

High Schools partner with state universities who certify a student’s completion of the core. Our partner is Indiana University East. Students must take at least 15 credits within the 30 credit hours through IU and may use a variety of means to satisfy the ICC requirements included qualifying AP scores and courses through Ivy Tech. Below is a one page resource detailing the SHS courses that can be used to fulfill the ICC.

What is FAFSA?

The Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the most important document for determining if you’re eligible for financial aid — money to help you pay for education and training beyond high school. The easiest way to file the FAFSA is online at FAFSA.gov.

After you file your FAFSA, your college will be able to tell you which scholarships and grants you could receive as well as how much money you can borrow in federal loans. To find out more about the FAFSA, including what kinds of state financial aid is available, check out Learn More Indiana’s FAFSA guide for Hoosiers.
